Screens are used to size and separate materials.  They are typically placed somewhere along a process line where a shredder, grinder or pulverizer of some kind has converted some larger product into a smaller product.  By using screens with different size holes in them, product that is the desired size can drop through onto some conveyance to be transported to its intended use.  Oversize material may be discarded or returned for further processing until all of it passes through the desired screen.

Screens come in a wide array of sizes, styles and price ranges.  Volume and the desired product dictate size and cost.  Costs can range from a few thousand dollars up to hundreds of thousand of dollars.
